During the annual conference Meeting Materials, taking place on 13 December 2022, the Grade2XL project will organize an Additive Manufacturing Challenge for students, researchers and engineers in the field of Aerospace, Architecture, Design, Maritime, Materials, Mechanical, a.o. as part of the Grade2XL project. We therefore challenge you to design a novel product, to be printed with wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM).

European Corrosion Medal 2022 awarded to Arjan Mol
Arjan Mol, Professor of Corrosion Technology and Electrochemistry at Delft University of Technology’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Scientific Director of the 4TU.Centre High-Tech Materials, has been awarded the prestigious European Corrosion Medal 2022 for his work on corrosion.
Bessemer Gold Medal Award for Professor Rob Boom
We are proud to announce that professor emeritus Rob Boom from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of TU Delft has been awarded the Bessemer Gold Medal for his outstanding services to the steel industry.
New Perspectief Program Granted: DEPMAT
NWO granted the program Data Enhanced Physical models to reduce Materials use (DEPMAT) under the Perspectief call 2020. This 5-years research program will be led by Prof. dr. ir. Ton van den Boogaard of University of Twente and involves 3 technical universities in the Netherlands and 5 industrial partners. M2i will be responsible for the management of this program.
New Perspectief Program Granted: Circular Circuits
NWO granted the program Circular Circuits under the Perspectief call 2020. This 5-years research program will focus on the design of next generation electronics for a circular economy and be led by Prof. dr. Arnold Tukker of Leiden University. The project involves 11 universities and research institutes and 17 industrial partners. M2i will be responsible for the management of this program.

Funded by the Perspectief Initiative from NWO, the ENLIGHTEN project (Enabling Integrated Lightweight Structures in High-Volumes) ultimately aims to provide solutions for sustainable transport.
M2i project enters the INTERREG 2 Seas Project Video Awards 2022 Competition
The M2i project QUALIFY (Enabling Qualification of Hybrid Structures for Lightweight and Safe Maritime Transport), a cross-border collaborative project co-funded by the INTERREG 2Seas Mers Zeeën Programme, has entered the 2 Seas Project Video Awards 2022 competition.
Second Grade2XL webinar: “Code Case 3020 for additive manufacturing”
The second Grade2XL webinar will be on 24th of June at 14:00, this time the topic is “Code Case 3020 for additive manufacturing”. During the 2nd Grade2XL webinar the two speakers Mark Douglass and Pallav Chattopadhyay from Lincoln Electric will give an overview of the ASME Code Case 3020. This is the opportunity to learn more about its concrete application as part of a large study using this methodology and to take advantage of best practices.
The Grade2XL project partners meet in Nantes
On 18-19 May 2022, Naval Group hosted the Grade2XL partners in Nantes for a 2-day meeting mixing project review sessions and industrial visits. The event gathered 30 onsite participants and 8 online attendees, offering a great opportunity to review the project’s progress and discuss the next technical developments.

Meet the winners of the Grade2XL Design Contest
During the annual Meeting Materials conference of 5 April, organized by M2i, Grade2XL held its second open Additive Manufacturing Design Contest for young engineers. Normally the Meeting Materials conference takes place in December, but due to COVID-19 the December 2021 conference was postponed until April 2022. For the Grade2XL contest we challenged young professionals and researchers to design a novel, multi-material product that can be printed with wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM).
M2i – Conference Meeting Materials April 2022- looking back!
We look back at a successful conference with a total of 210 participants on both days. Due to COVID-19 the December 2021 conference was posponed until April 2022. We aimed for a live conference and we achieved that goal!
3DMed project final event
On 29 March, the Interreg 2Seas project 3DMed will be concluded with its final event. Within the project the consortium has advanced the state-of-the-art of 3D printing technologies for medical applications and streamlined the integration through a software aided workflow.

Deadline postponed: Design Contest for Young Engineers April 2022
The annual conference M2i Meeting Materials, will host an open Additive Manufacturing Design Contest for young engineers. Due to the growing numbers of infections end November and the Dutch Covid-19 measures that were inforced on Saturday 13 November 2021, the conference will be postponed from 14 December to 5 April 2022. This means the Additive Manufacturing Design Contest deadline for submission will be postponed from 19 November 2021 to 24 February 2022 .
Prof. Arjan Mol, new scientific director 4TU.HTM
As of 1 January 2022, Prof. Arjan Mol (Delft University of Technology) will be the new scientific director of the 4TU.Centre High-Tech Materials (4TU.HTM). He succeeds Prof. Jilt Sietsma, who was one of the initiators of 4TU.HTM and has led the centre since its inception in 2014.

Looking back at a successful Final QUALIFY Event
On Tuesday 23 November 2021, the Final QUALIFY event took place as a hybrid event, and was also streamlined for a wider public. The QUALIFY project ran for more than four years and was funded from the INTERREG 2 Seas Mers Zeeën programme.

Summary of the results of M-ERA.NET 2 Calls 2016 – 2020 published
From 2016 to 2020, altogether 959 proposals were received and 172 transnational projects were funded. Combined national, regional and European funding of 125 mio. € was mobilised to support 763 research groups across Europe and beyond.
