Next Grade2XL webinar: “WAAM & Fe-Ni alloy in aerospace tooling applications” on 1 December

The Grade2XL webinar will be on 1 December at 13:00, this time the topic is “WAAM & Fe-Ni alloy in aerospace tooling applications”. During the Grade2XL webinar the two speakers, Marko Bosman (Chief Technologist at GKN Aerospace) and Arjun Sood (Materials Science Engineer, PhD candidate at TU Delft), will discuss Tailoring low expansion Fe-Ni alloy compositions for aerospace tooling applications using twin wire arc additive manufacturing.

Grade2XL AM Challenge: Application Deadline extended till 8 November

During the annual conference M2i Conference, taking place on 11 December 2022, the Grade2XL project will organize an Additive Manufacturing Challenge for students, researchers and engineers in the field of Aerospace, Architecture, Design, Maritime, Materials, Mechanical, a.o. as part of the Grade2XL project. We therefore challenge you to design a novel product, to be printed with wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM).

The Grade2XL project partners meet in Austria

On 12 and 13 October 2023, Voestalpine Bowler Welding (vaBWG) hosted in Leoben (Austria) 2-days meeting with the Grade2XL partners for the project review sessions and an industrial visit to the facilities of the vaBWG plant in Donawitz. The tour included Voestalpine Innovation Centre for Green Steel and the rolling plant for wire rod.

Smart*Light 2.0 Kick-off event held!

On 14 September, the Smart*Light 2.0 project kicked off at Differ. Building upon the achievements of the Interreg V project SmartLight, this new initiative represents a significant leap in X-ray analysis, allowing us to delve deeper into the structures of materials, objects, and tissues.

Seminar Circular Electronics on Tuesday, September 26th, TU Delft (free)

Electronics uses many of the critical raw materials. Current manufacturing technologies made consumable electronics very accessible but barely recyclable. Different strategies for improving the circularity of electronic devices are in the scope of the Circular Circuits project, funded by the Dutch NWO Perspectief program under the leadership of Prof. dr. ir. Arnold Tukker managed by M2i.

DEPMAT Kick-Off Event Held!​

On August 31st, the full consortium gathered at Tata Steel Netherlands in IJmuiden for the kick-off event of the DEPMAT Perspectief program. With 35+ people attending the event, ranging from the PhD and PostDoc researchers and supervisors, to the industrial representatives of the various companies, the event was a success.

Nationaal Groeifonds proposal receives positive recommendation

On June 30th, the Nationaal Groeifonds committee gave a positive advice for the granting of the Groeien met Groen Staal (Growing with Green Steel) proposal. This programme is a plan to make the Dutch steel sector more sustainable by 2030, and fully CO2-neutral by 2050. To this end, the Netherlands is developing a technological lead, through which the country will not only work towards climate goals but will also become more economically competitive.

PhD Defense – cum laude for Björn Nijhuis

M2i is proud to announce that on 22 June 2023, Björn Nijhuis defended his PhD thesis (Efficient Thermomechanical Modelling of Large-Scale Metal Additive Manufacturing).  Björn’s project was part of the Perspective programme Aim2XL, and he obtained his PhD cum laude!!

Jilt Sietsma, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE) of the Technical University Delft was made a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion in Rijswijk.

Smart*Light Workshop: Shedding Smart*Light on materials

The Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland project Smart*Light is coming to an end. The project, started in 2018, was designed to develop a revolutionary compact and movable tuneable X-ray source with high brilliance for a great number of applications, from complex materials characterizations to analysis of art works and advanced medical research.

M2i is proud to announce that on 21 April 2023, Tijmen Vermeij defended his PhD thesis “High-Resolution Identification of Plasticity and Damage in Multi-Phase Steels”. The project was a collaboration between M2i, NWO, TATA Steel, and TU Eindhoven. Tijmen obtained his PhD cum laude!

Micky Adriaansens, Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, visited the AiM2XL consortium on 20th March, 2023 at RAMLAB in Rotterdam to learn more about the AiM2XL program. “Additive Manufacturing of Large-scale components” (AiM2XL) is a Perspectief program that started five years ago with funding from the Dutch Research Council TTW-NWO and is led by prof. Fred van Keulen from TU Delft.
