On April 8, 2025, the Materials innovation institute (M2i) hosted the thematic meeting “Towards Circular Economy in Metals” at Het Vakwerkhuis in Delft. The event convened experts from academia, industry, and government to explore strategies for transitioning the metals sector towards circularity. The program topics spanned over the whole metal life cycle allowing for a balanced view.
Program Highlights:
- Benjamin Sprecher (TU Delft): Discussed how circular design can address challenges related to critical raw materials.
- Pieter Kuiper (ARN): Shared insights on metal circularity from an automotive recycling perspective.
- Christina Meskers (SINTEF): Presented on the role of zero-emission processes in achieving circularity, highlighting Norway’s advancements in low-emission metal production.
- Frank Schrama (Tata Steel Europe): Outlined research initiatives aimed at increasing steel circularity in the Netherlands.
- Kevin Rossi (TU Delft): Explored the application of artificial intelligence in modeling metals circularity from atomic to global scales.
- Roel Smallegoor (Myne): Discussed innovations in metal sorting technologies to support the circular economy.
- Theresa Wallner (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management): Addressed policy frameworks influencing metal circularity, including the EU Critical Raw Materials Act and the Dutch National Circular Economy Strategy.
- Harmen Oterdoom (Butterbridge): Provided perspectives on market dynamics, technology, and innovation from the viewpoint of industrial SMEs.
The meeting also featured a poster session during lunch, allowing researchers to showcase their work on circularity. The day concluded with a panel discussion and networking drinks, fostering collaboration among participants.
