On 7 October 2025, experts from research, industry, and regulatory bodies convened at the Mikrocentrum in Veldhoven for the M2i thematic meeting "REACH-ing for a PFAS-Free Future." The event addressed the urgent challenge of developing sustainable alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—materials long valued for their durability and versatility, yet increasingly restricted due to environmental and health concerns.
Their widespread use across diverse applications makes finding suitable replacements particularly complex, due to the inability to find one alternative that can match their performance in all fields.
Speakers from RIVM, Wittenburg Group, TU/e, ECEA, WUR, ASML, and Imperial College shared insights on safe-by-design approaches, PFAS-free coatings, tribology, and practical industry cases. The presentations sparked lively Q&A sessions and engaging discussions, while breaks and closing drinks provided opportunities for networking and exchange of ideas.
Participants left inspired to continue innovating toward materials for a safer, more sustainable future. We look forward to supporting future collaborations in this challenging and interesting field.
