kivi-niriaM2i arranged two interesting sessions on sustainable use of materials at the Kivi Niria Conference 2011.

M2i gladly accepted an invitation to organize two program sessions on the Kivi Niria conference on Smart Materials Use November 23rd at the Delft University of Technology. Finding ways to work in more sustainable way with material resources was the theme of this yearly conference of the Dutch association of engineers and engineering students. With the help of its network of industrial and university partners, M2i was able to arrange two interesting sessions.

Sustainable use of materials, how is that done?
A roadmap was presented by Derk Bol, program manager of M2i, on the different ways to come to sustainable use of materials. This roadmap was drawn up in a brainstorm session with various academics of the TU Delft. Both the roadmap and the presentation are available here. As an illustration how sustainable use of materials can be put in practice, Tom Devoldere, of Philips Brugge presented the design and development of the green design of the new LED TV Econova.

Nanosilica and Graphene, new materials for sustainability
In this session two examples were presented of new materials which can deliver an important contribution to the reduction of energy consumption, CO2 emission and use of scarce raw material resources. George Quercia Bianchi, researcher at M2i presented the results of his research on the use of nanosilica in concrete which will replace the use of cement an in this way mean a large reduction in CO2 emission. The presentation can be found here. Bart van Wees, professor at the Zernike institute of Advanced Materials in Groningen presented an overview of the fundamentls and applications of graphene. This novel material may replace more scarce materials like IndiumTinOxide (ITO) in LED screens.
