M2i strives to introduce breakthrough materials technologies. New business is created by combining competences of parties from different market and research domains.
The research program of M2i program covers a very diverse range of materials technologies, and connects industrial partners that operate in different market domains. With its Multi-domain Business Creation module, M2i strives to introduce innovative breakthrough materials technologies, by means of projects that are preferably performed by multiple partners. By using the full range of competences in different materials technology sectors and combining the functionality needs of different partners, opportunities for new businesses will definitely arise. Within this context, former M2i efforts concerned for example the application of laser cladding technology in wire production, and the application of MEMS technology in the optical market domain.
Connection
M2i organizes workshops which serve as platform for “beyond the ordinary contacts” in which industrial and academic partners share knowledge from different markets and research areas. In addition, business courses challenge researchers to generate innovative ideas. In the Multi-domain Business Creation module, we aim for innovations which go further than optimizing an existing process or complementing an existing business. M2i examines the feasibility of a concept based on long-term research or short-term feasibility studies. If a concept is feasible, a demonstrator (prototype) project can be started to go from idea to product.
Breakthrough
After a successful demonstrator project, the knowledge is transferred to industrial partners, or a start-up is initiated. M2i helps the parties requesting patents and developing a successful new business. The Multi-domain Business Creation module is for partners who are looking for breakthrough innovative ideas, or for partners who have an idea for a new product whose development is hindered by lack of technological knowledge.
