Flexweld is a company specialized in welding and laser cladding technology. They were interested in a feasibility study of a wear resistant layer on a chain wheel of a Leopard 2 tank. Flexweld was already familiar with the expertise of M2i, the Laser Application Centre (LAC) and University Twente as a result of an preceeding successful cooperation in laser welding.

During the Flying Squad visit of M2i and LAC to Flexweld the possibilities of laser cladding were discussed.
Benefits
• During the visit it became clear that the process was both technically and economically feasible, provided that the layer thickness to be applied was maximized.
• M2i and LAC also participated in a subsequent series of tests on real parts.
• Due to M2i’s Facility Sharing program the required equipment was available and could be used.
