On June 8th 2010 a workshop was organized by M2i on developments in welding. After a general introduction of the agenda for the workshop and of M2i several presentations were given on the developments of welding technologies and of materials to be welded.
In the afternoon session the actual workshop took place, mainly dealing with the welding of metals. The first part of the workshop was devoted to technologies that have to be developed or should become available to fulfill the demands of the market. The second part of the workshop concentrated on the specific demands in the various market segments.
Conclusions:
• There were a lot of participants in the workshop from various industrial backgrounds indicating that developments in welding are relevant for a broad range of industries.
• Research and development activities will be necessary to innovate/ realize the introduction of various new technologies and material-combinations in practice.
• Existing technologies (e.g. gas metal arc welding) can still be improved and there is a need for the development of more fundamental insights in this area as well.
• Welding does not have the positive image that it should have related to the technological and scientific challenges that we are facing.
• Training of welders is essential to come to good welds.
